One of the easiest ways to stop a conversation is to stigmatize a word.
Instead of engaging with an idea, we attach a label to it. Once it’s labeled, many people dismiss it without ever asking what it actually means.
Words like:
• Self-improvement
• Veganism or vegetarianism
• Christianity
• Nationalism
• Meditation
• Philosophy
• Capitalism
• Socialism
• Patriotism
• Feminism
• Masculinity
• Therapy
• Religion
• Spirituality
• Tradition
• Progressivism
• Conservatism
• Minimalism
• Homeschooling
• AI
• Climate change
Each of these words can trigger an emotional reaction before any real conversation begins.
The label becomes more important than the substance.
Healthy dialogue doesn’t begin by assuming a word is good or bad. It begins with curiosity. Ask, “What do you mean by that?” before deciding whether you agree or disagree.
When we stigmatize words, we stop thinking. When we seek understanding, we start growing.
